Trio Dianella is a woodwind ensemble formed by Maria Zhdanovich, Karen Chen, and William Hanna during their studies at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM). Their musical partnership emerged from a shared curiosity and close collaboration across a range of chamber and orchestral projects, including performances of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Quintet and a chamber arrangement of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. The trio shares a deep interest in both traditional and contemporary repertoire, bringing an adventurous and thoughtful approach to their programming.

Maria Zhdanovich is an award-winning flautist and 2021 Freedman Fellowship nominee. She has performed with the Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, and West Australian Symphony Orchestras, as well as the Auckland Philharmonia and Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. Her creative projects include structured improvisation at the National Gallery of Victoria, curation and collaboration at the Immigration Museum, and a multimedia short film with Polyphonic Pictures featuring her performance of Kent Kennan’s Night Soliloquy.

Karen Chen has performed with the Auckland Philharmonia, West Australian Symphony Orchestra, and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. She has also appeared as Principal Clarinet with the Järvi Academy Orchestra under Neeme and Paavo Järvi. In recent years, Karen has become a passionate advocate for underrepresented repertoire and musical styles, including electroacoustic music, improvisation, and works by Australian and female composers. She is also an enthusiastic proponent of the reed quintet genre, with a particular interest in expanding the clarinet’s role in contemporary chamber music.

William Hanna is a Melbourne-based bassoonist and composer with a strong interest in tonal music, historical performance, and lesser-used instruments such as the contrabassoon and baroque bassoon. In 2024, he performed as a soloist with the Victorian Youth Symphony Orchestra, premiering his newly composed Double Concertino in A-flat Major. He also premiered two original works in his ANAM recital, and his compositions have been performed by the Casey Philharmonic Orchestra and Grainger Wind Symphony.
